Trick or Treat?

14th October 2013

With Halloween approaching, what should the Christian viewpoint be? Is it a bit of harmless fun when kids enjoy sweets, dressing up and trick or treating? What does the Bible say?

"Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you." Deuteronomy 18:10-12

God is a God of love and hates all evil. These verses say that witchcraft, sorcery and consulting the dead are all detestable to God.

Is Halloween just a harmless night of spooky scary stories, dressing up and having fun for children?

I don't think so. In terms of trick or treat I think Halloween is Satan's biggest trick getting parents to believe it is just a bit of fun when in fact our children are subtly being exposed to talk of witches, ghosts and evil influences.

Make no mistake as Christians we are fighting a 'spiritual battle' and we are called to be different; 'in the world but not of it'. We need to protect our children from any evil influence in the world and one of the ways I feel we can do this is by not celebrating Halloween.
